PRS

EPF is one pillar. PRS is a voluntary one you control.

Private Retirement Scheme accounts are a voluntary way to save for later life, separate from EPF. Contributions may qualify for tax relief under the rules for that year.

What PRS is

A Private Retirement Scheme is a voluntary retirement savings scheme in Malaysia, offered through approved providers and a range of funds. It is not EPF, and it is not a life insurance policy, though some people fund both.

Money is intended for retirement. Withdrawals before the retirement age are restricted and can have tax consequences. The scheme rules, not a brochure slogan, decide when you can take money out.

How we talk about it

The useful conversation is contribution size, fund risk, fees, and whether a tax relief applies under the current LHDN rules for that year of assessment. Relief amounts change. We check the year’s limit rather than quote an old figure.

PRS does not replace life or medical cover. A retirement fund does not pay a hospital, and a hospital plan does not build a retirement income.
